The National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) is the oldest and most prestigious educational institution of Greece in the field of technology, and has contributed unceasingly to the country's scientific, technical and economic development. Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology ICT, Pfinztal, Germany

The Fraunhofer Institute for Chemical Technology (ICT) is one of around sixty institutes that make up the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, which is Europe’s largest applied research organisation. Scientists at the Fraunhofer ICT carry out research and development work within the key competence areas of polymer and environmental engineering, energetic materials and systems and applied electrochemistry.

The resulting knowledge and developments are applied in the following business areas: automotive and transport technology, chemistry and process engineering, energy and environment, defense, safety, security, air and space travel.

Developments are followed through from the initial concept via basic research to applied research and the realisation of customer-specific, pilot-level applications. Our expertise covers conception and design, product development, processing technology, material development and characterisation, and quality assurance.

Fraunhofer ICT’s role in the MF-Retrofit project is the development and characterization of a polyurethane anchoring layer for retrofitting panels. Relevant competence areas include:

  • Synthesis and processing of chemical building blocks from bio-based resources up to pilot scale
  • Development, formulation and processing of foam materials such as polyurethane and polystyrene, production of semi-finished products and components
  • Development and production of polymer compounds using nanoscale additives to adjust the electrical, mechanical or thermal properties of polymers and composites

MBN Nanomaterialia S.p.A. (Italy) was established in 1994 with core business being concentrated in the development of mechanochemical reactors for the production of nanophased materials produced by high energy ball milling. With an industrial production capacity of a hundred ton/range, MBN’s mission is to bring nanotechnology from research environment to everyday life products offering to the market innovative nanomaterials adaptable to conventional and new powder metallurgy and deposition processes. The industrial production is focused on environmental friendly (Co free) alloys for diamond grinding tools and high performance thermal spraying powders (Ti, WC-Co, MMC’s). The materials produced by MBN represent the direct outcome of scientific and technological research initiatives performed at National and European level in collaboration with Universities, Research Institutes and Industries.



CERTH is a legal, non-profit entity organized under the auspices of the General Secretariat for Research and Technology (GSRT), of the Greek Ministry of Development. CERTH draws heavily from the critical scientific mass of the University of Thessaly. CERTH’s mission is to conduct basic, applied, and technological research that leads to new materials, products and services with industrial, economic and social impact. Members of Electronics, Materials, and Mechatronics will contribute to the implementation of the proposed research. All members have extensive research experience, evident by their individual publications, their success in obtaining research grants in the EU and USA and their patents.

CERTH will have significant input in almost all the work packages of the project. Specifically it will be responsible for the research in the field of photocatalytic agents and coatings focusing on the self-cleaning character as well as on the degradation of air pollutants. Moreover, they will have active role in the characterization tests and during the integration of the façade. Cereteth has vast experience in participating in large European projects. Indicatively, the lasta five years has participated in more than 15 EC project. The insitutes stuff has deep knowledge in research fields relative to photocatalysis for environmental and medical application, production and characterization of protective organic and inorganic coatings as well as characterization of nano-materials.

Study Profile
The University of Aveiro offers a wide range of degree programmes in various areas of knowledge which reflect its multidisciplinary and innovative character and are designed to build student competences in scientific and technical areas that meet the emerging needs of business, industry and society. The University’s degree programmes are delivered in an atmosphere of research, precision and quality and are organised in three cycles: the 1st cycle lasts three years and results in a Licenciatura degree; the 2nd cycle requires two years to complete a Masters degree; and the 3rd cycle takes between three and five years to obtain a Doctorate.
